It smells like he burnt out the clutch... The smell is caused by the clutch plate spinning against the flywheel face for an extended period of time and overheating it.
If the clutch is operating normally now, you have escaped a potentially expensive clutch replacement. If it is continually slipping or engages at a much higher point on the clutch pedal arc, you need to get the clutch replaced.
This is a common problem with drivers who are unfamiliar with stick-shift transmissions...

Yes, the smell you noticed is most likely the smell of clutch plates that got hot under friction.
These plates are made of a material very similar to what brake pads are made of, and they wear in time, with burning being the most serious wear and tear of all, it is a practice to be avoided.
That having been said, unless your clutch has a lot of miles and wear and tear on it, a one time solid burn may not be the best thing for it, but more likely than not your car should run just fine for many more years.
If, per chance, you start to notice the clutch slipping when in gear with the pedal fully released, then it is possible that the burn made it so, but be aware that the burn merely precipitated the inevitable perhaps by a few months.
So, you can admonish your friend but it's nothing to kill over.

The smell that you are smelling is the clutch from him not knowing how to drive the car. Its not serious, just don't let him be driving your car until he learns how to drive.

Probably burned out the clutch. Enjoy the 800 dollar repair bill for a new clutch. See if you can get it in under the warranty...
