this is the exact verbage of title IX:
"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."

this law was enacted to ensure that women's sports in high school and college would be treated equally to that of men's sports...it has caused a great deal of controversy because many discrimination lawsuits have been brought against schools on the grounds of title IX, and also because less publicized men's sports such as swimming, volleyball, gymnastics, etc. have had their funding cut as schools scramble to comply with title IX, spending more and more money on women's sports so as to avoid litigation
