Knock on Wood was a 1967 hit song written and performed by Eddie Floyd. It was covered by David Bowie, recorded live during his 1974 US tour and released as a single in the UK in 1974, and was also covered by Amii Stewart in 1978, for which it became a #1 single in the United States.

With Bowie becoming fascinated with soul music on his 1974 American tour, a rendition of “Knock on Wood” was added to the live repertoire. This was chosen from the Tower Theatre recordings for the live double album David Live to be released as a single in the UK, with “Panic in Detroit” from the same concerts as a B-side. In America, “Rock ‘N’ Roll with Me” was chosen to promote the album. The British single made #10 in the charts, while the American version failed to chart.

Bowie’s fascination with soul would peak in 1975 with the Young Americans album.
