There are square ones. But round ones are better on the eye.

The basic design of the clock is to resemble the sun dial of ancient times. The clock need not be round to work, there are plenty of clocks in rectangular or square shape.

They aren't, at least not all. The circular motion of the hands is due to the rotation of the gears inside the clock. Some type of drive (motor, spring etc.) spins a gear which spins another and so on reducing the initial speed of the drive to the desired rate for the desired ''hand'' (hours, minutes and seconds).

I had a square clock, a triangle clock, a oval clock, a octogan clock, a rectangle clock, a tear drop shaped clock, a clock that had three seperate rectangles and the hands were in the middle one...........
but I have never had a round clock. Soooo, sorry I couldn't tell you.

Because all the points on the perimeter of a circle are the same distance from the center, the hands can then move at a steady rate and keep time "evenly," if you know what I mean...It takes the same interval to move from each marker to the next...
