Being completely honest, the best piece of advice I was given was "party like a rockstar".
I had spent so much time constantly worried about things that I could not change. Worried about making deadlines, pleasing other peole, throwing off a "hard" image.....that I never took the time to really enjoy life.
Man, I thank my grandfather for drinking all that Mad Dogg 20/20, and dropping that gem of knowledge on me.

Other people cannot hurt my feelings because I control how I feel. If you don't like something that's been said or done, say what you feel right then. It took me some time to accept this but since I did my heart has a lot more room it it now for the great things in life.

"Ethics For the New Millenium"
by H.H. Dalai Lama XIV

This book gave me the feeling of renewed interest in my life and clearly outlined a way that I could live through all the hardships that I was suffering at the time. I didn't know just how depressed I was until I read this book.

I will always be eternally grateful for the new perspective I have on my life. I am so much healthier and happier now... I was able to overcome addiction and disease. I am able to give things back to the world in terms of beauty, compassion and grace.

My mother always said: "Don't dumb it down for people... make them catch up to you... it won't hurt them to have to reach for their dictionary once in awhile."
Love her for that...

Self improvement is the best thing in life. You needn't rush it because you have all the time in your life to do it and it takes your whole life to do.

My aunt wrote in my 8th grade year book :
"Remember to never follow - YOU lead".
It's all about being true to yourself. What great advice, huh?

I don't know if this qualifies because it was something I had instinctively known or was newly acquired. " You can't go wrong doing the right thing. " And you can't!
