Samurai were retainers to daimyo. Daimyo were lords of the various provinces. The word "bushi" means to serve. If a samurai did not have a master, he was known as a ronin.

Samurai were expected to be loyal to their master unto death and were expected to die if ordered so by their master whether in battle or by seppeku - ritual suicide. One of the most famous cases of loyalty was the story of the 47 Ronin who avenged their master's death which occurred nearly two years earlier.
