My Citroen C5's engine breather snapped because it was so brittle. The RAC man taped it up and told me it is ok to drive with a taped-up broken breather. Is that true? Is it dangerous to drive with a broken breather? I intend to have it replaced as soon as possible or should I?

I find it strange that any pipe has degraded to such a degree on a relatively modern car such as a C5. But anyway, I presume the car is working fine with the repair in place? If so then do not worry. Yes get it replaced when you can but do not worry over the matter.

If it was my car (this is just my opinion) and the repair was of good quality then I would simply leave it untill the next service unless the rest of the pipe was degrading.

I can only equate this as a fuel injection engine where the air is monitored through a closed air intake system. If this is what you have then this is the problem: The closed air intake is computerized and monitored and if it has a leak after the computer monitors it then it will cause engine problems up to the point of not running. This requires replacing it or sealing out the air.

No problem. The Breather is only to allow Crank Case fumes to escape, or to be fed back into the inlet manifold. With very sophisticated cars that monitor inlet gas, this might be more important, but with the C5, you don't have a problem.

If the breather that was on the vehicle was old enough to be brittle, then its way past time for a new one. The breather is one of the most important items on a vehicle. It keeps dirt from entering your engine.

its not really dangerous it'll just suck dirt down your intake .and you have to be on a dusty road for that too really hurt it. it could make it suck air , which may cause it to idle a little rough.would'nt hurt to get it fixed.
