Learning a new word every day is a great place to start. Tons of websites have a word of the day feature. Try dictionary.com or refdesk.com, they have some pretty good ones. I agree that reading does not always work, but also try reading newspapers and news sites such as newsweek.com. Even if you are only adding one word a day, you are still expanding your vocabulary.

Read How to Build A Better Vocabulary

Also, listen to speeches of great politicians (you can check these out at the library on cassette or CD) like Winston Churchill, Martin Luther King, Jr, John F. Kennedy, etc.

My grandfather was born in 1896 and only attended school through the third grade but he was extremely literate because he read the dictionary (English and Latin) everyday. He learned at least one new word a day and used those words often.

Read good books on your reading level.
When you come to a word that you don't know how to pronounce or know the meaning, of, look it up in the dictionary you have at hand. I promise you will have a great vocab after 6 months of reading a book a week this way.
Good luck.

READING IS THE BEST WAY TO EXPAND YOUR VOCABULARY!!!! It is - even going through magazines and newspapers, if not good books, is the best way to expose yourself to various words and jargon. You said that you may have trouble with writing and talking - the sentence structure and word usage in a novel will improve your abilities IMMENSELY!!! Is it the fact that you don't like to read, or that you don't want to read? Reading is fun - try to find a book that you actually like, and try to dedicate yourself to reading at least 15 - 30 pages each night; you will definitely see some improvement in yourself. Reading doesn't have to be a chore - have some fun!

application and repetition. I'd say start with a dictionary...when you come across a word or words you don't know, look them up...read their meaning, then try to find a way to incorporate or use them in your daily conversation. By saying it, hearing it, and using them...they will become a part of your daily vocabulary.

While they seem very elementary, flash cards are always good...have a friend quiz you. Also learn their proper enunciation.

A thesaurus is also a good means of learning new words and alternates to expand ones vocabulary.

I even have discovered that the main suitable thank you to do it relatively is to easily examine each and every thing. The extra you examine, the extra you learn. in case you do no longer understand a word whilst analyzing, %. up a dictionary and seem it up. verify you already know the thank you to pronounce it, too, so as for you to use it in speech besides as in writing. once you examine, be conscious the various sorts of writing. test via writing short thoughts or passages in those types. discover out what makes you relatively like specific types or plots, and write them down. Refer back to that checklist whilst writing, so which you would be able to write in a manner you will like. i might say that once analyzing, attempt to examine extra books from a on a similar time as in the past (which includes Jane Austen's books, or maybe Anya Seton--Katherine is a huge novel), simply by fact they have a tendency to have extra "vast" words than books located in recent times. (regardless of the actuality that books from now could be an relatively stable source too). performs are stable, yet they do no longer seem to be the main suitable for vocabulary or gaining awareness of to write, simply by fact they're conversing, and this is totally diverse from novels, and because that form of writing is so constrained. except, of direction, you opt for for to be a play write. Then, via all potential, examine a play. I additionally discover that crossword puzzles (particularly annoying ones, a minimum of) help with vocabulary. different word video games, too. wish this permits. =]
