The most popular theory is that earth was struck by large celestial body during the accretion period. The object was so large that it almost destroyed the earth. The ejecta was blasted into space and it formed the moon.

before it was earth it was a larger planet it was hit by a smaller planet the force caused then to murged into one smaller mass and the large chunk that was thrown out was cought by its gravity and is now the moon.
