Hi

Ok , first you need to make sure that the modem is working , so open control panel , then select modems , now it should appear your modem there , if its not there then it means the driver is long gone. Now IF the modem is there , then select it and hit properties , on the diagnostic tab at the bottom it should say QUERY modem , now if numbers and letter appears then the modem is working OK , now if it bring an error like could not communicate with modem then there you go your modem drivers are gone. Now IF everything is ok then just unistall , AOL and re-install it

if it is a new XP machine, it should have loaded the drivers for the card. goto the system properties and make sure you have no yellow marks next to the modem . to goto there, hold down the windows key and hit the pause/break key. then select hardware and finally device manager. if there are yellow marks, then there is a problem . you can double click on the item and see what is wrong. you may need to reinstall the drivers for it.

Check the device driver:

To open Device Manager, click Start,
point to Settings,
and then click Control Panel.
Double-click System.
On the Hardware tab,
click Device Manager.
Right-cl the item to be checked and select Properties.

You should be told whether or not the item is working properly. You can also update the driver from here.
