Often a baby born gently at home does not cry--- They make a startled gasp as they take their first breath, then, if cuddled up by the mother, just look around with great curiosity.
Hospital births are quite different, as they are dangled upside down by the ankles, rubbed kind of roughly with towels, placed on a hard surface to be weighed, there are bright lights that shock their eyes (try being in a dark womb for 9 months then suddenly facing the bright lights) loud noises, and the sounds they came to know (Mom's voice, her muffled internal noses etc) are gone. They are terrified until they get handled back to their mothers.

It's how they get their first breath of life. If an infant doesn't cry, you know something's wrong. Crying creates a large rush of air which goes straight to the lungs, causing expansion and contraction to begin. It also clears any residue out of the airways to open them up.

You can pretty much ignore anything that talks about a baby's comfort in the womb or shock from a new environment. It's not true.

Because they just left a place that was warm, they had no responsibilities, and had all the food they wanted. They then realize that they will have to go to school, get a job for fifty years, finally get to retire when they are too old to enjoy what they can do with the money they have in retirement accounts, then die, and then the remainder of the money goes to unappreciative relatives. It's bringing a tear to my eyes as I think about it.
Actually, it's to clear the amnionic fluid from their lungs.

Just imagine:
Here you are, warm comfortable, in the dark. Fed floating in a sea of fluids.
And then...something has you, you're scared, you've never been touched before, it's always been just you. It's pulling on you, it won't let go And then Yank..............
It's overwhelmingly bright, you've never experienced the light before, never thought it was like this, so much light. You're cold, hungry afraid.
And these giant, huge things are so loud, you've never heard such sounds before and they're touching, poking at you.
You'd cry too. I know I would and did.

Because being inside a woman's womb is warm and comforting and when they come out why wouldn't they? It's cold, they're covered in blood, there's alot of commotion with the doctors and nurses, and the blinding light in their face. That's got to suck.

Wouldn't you cry if that ever happened to you. Man, I'm glad I hatched. That being born thing sounds to dramatic for me.
