They are large gravitational vortexes out in space, that were once giant stars. When the star died it collapses so violently it creates such a powerful gravitational pull that light cant even escape, hence the name “black holes”.

A black hole is a region of space that has much mass concentrated in it that there is no way for a nearby object to escape it's gravitational pull. The vortex, like whirlpool, is so powerful that it engulfs everything and anything. Stars sucked in can not emit its light out, naming it a black hole. The energy of a dead star creates a "BLACK HOLE".
If you throw a rock into the air the object would eventually come back down. If the same rock was thrown so hard that it left the earth, it would keep going on and on into space.

(Black holes are believed to form when stars collapse in on themselves.)

It is an area of space that has gravity so intense that nothing, not even light, can escape its surface and time comes to a stop. It is usually formed from a collapsed super-massive star.

Either that, or it is a gangsta rapper's girlfriend.
