During Spring tides, high tides are higher than average AND low tides are lower then average.
During Neap tides, high tides are lower than average AND low tides are higher then average.

Both the sun and the moon have an affect on the tides with the moon having the stronger of the two effects.

During Spring tides, the Sun and Moon are pulling together and during Neap tides the Sun and the Moon are pulling at right angles to each other.

Check out this great link for pictures and explanations of other types of tides.

neap tides are low tides, and they come in two times a month, depending on the moon's stage (full moon, new moon, quarter moon, etc.) Spring tides are the really high tides, they also come in twice a month depending on the moon's stage. I remembered the spring tide like a spring, bouncing back, then spring up creating a big tide.
