For cheap accomodation in France you are best to use a directory of hotels, hostels , pensions , b&b's , and serviced apartments where you can sort the alternatives and compare the offers.

If service is involved, and the place are star rated, then they are likely to be good ( scaled 1 thru 5 star ) . A reputable website like Cheaperthanhotels France contracts reputable properties.

"Cheap" doesn't always mean the best price. There are other considerations, like free inclusions, amenities that would otherwise cost you money, location to reduce your transportation costs and "comfort". So your valued judgement is important.

btw - as someone above said - France is an ultra modern country - so there should be no issues on cleanliness.

You can sort location, star rating and price on the web pages below ( English and French ) , then dig deeper into the offerings to find out what inclusions are available, by hovering your mouse over the prices ( last minute offers only )

Good luck with you planning. ( I also gave you some official Government Tourism links ) - hope it helps.

The "auberge de jeunesse" and severla other mentions don't have to sound so, well, foreign for an English speaker. They are talking about forms of youth hostels, where there's usually a communal bunk room. Not a lot of privacy, but --- good place to meet people, good place to use as a base during a trip.

France has many wonderful hostels.

The other good tip I saw listed was that your money will go further with (a) a rail pass, like a Eurail pass; and, (b) it will go further in France if you try venues other than Paris (Lyon, the second largest city in France, is very much a 'people's city,' and it has a nice youth hostel - that's one example; small towns I can recommend include Albi and Arras).

Have fun!
