Painting Lampshades?

I am painting my living room and I would like the lampshades of my lamps to match the room. But I don't want to go out and buy new lampshades. Is there a sure fire way to water down the acrylic without lightening the hue? I do not want to dye it because it would turn out pink, this I am aware. Any suggestions would help.
