Ok.... I am really bad at math... As you can tell... LOL... I will really appreciate it if you help me with this problem:
The marching band stands on the 50 yard line of the footbal field. After each set of steps, their distance to the goal is 4/5 of the previous distance. How far do they travel in the 2nd set of steps?
--- Please do not be mean......---
Please also tell ever step on how to do the problem...
Thank you SO MUCH!

The question tells us that:
(1) Distance to 50 yard line = 50 yards
(2) Distance to net after this step = total current distance to net * 4/5 (This is from the second sentence in the question)

The size of each step is obtained as follows:
(3) Step size is = total current distance to net - Distance to net after this step

Since you want the distance to the net after the first step, you should just

After one step we know the distance to the net is:
(a) 4/5 (50) = 40 from formula (2)

So now we know that after the second step, the distance will be: This is done by substituting the previously found value in the question again.
40 * (4/5) = 32 from formula (2) and (a)

So we know that the first step size from formula (3) is
50 - 40 = 10

The second step size is:
40 - 32 = 8
Therefore, the distance travelled on the second step is 8.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
So lets review,
We can get the distance after each step by recursively using formula (2)
Initial disance to goal:
50
Distance after first step:
4/5 * 50 = 40
Distance after second step:
(4/5 * 50) * 4/5 = 32
Distance after third step:
((4/5 * 50) * 4/5) * 4/5 = 25.6
Distance after fourth step:
(((4/5 * 50) * 4/5) * 4/5) * 4/5 = 20.48
etc...

The step size can be found by subtracting the new distance from the old distance:
Step 1:
50 - 40 = 10
Step 2:
40 - 32 = 8
Step 3:
32 - 25.6 = 6.4
Step 4:
25.6 - 20.48 = 5.12
etc...

well the first step is 10 because it would be 1/5 the distance traveled, which is 4/5 the preivious distance. 50-10=40. then 1/5 of 40 equals 8, so 8+10=18

8 yards.

If they traveled 1/5 of 50 yards, that would be 10, leaving 40. 1/5 of 40 is 8.
