my friends and i were playing dodgeball today and this situation came up:
-I had a ball in my hand and one was thrown at me. I caught it cleanly, but dropped the ball i was holding.

We play under the rule system that if you block a ball with one you're holding and you drop it, then you're out. I argued this was different because i caught the ball thrown at me.
We also play under the rules that after catching a ball your teammate gets to return to the game

What are your interpretations? some said i should be out, the person who threw it should be out, and one of my teammates should be in
i argued that it should count as a catch with no drop.
Please don't say im taking this to far

Wow, its great to see people still play dodgeball. It brings back memories of my childhood, I was so fast, I remember one guys throwing the ball at me and point blank range and I dodged it.

I would say you are right - but don't make a big deal out of it, just make sure everyone agrees beforehand what the rule would be in that situation.

If the ball thrown at you hit your ball and caused you to drop it and then you caught the ball they threw then you are out. No teammate should be allowed to return because you were out before you caught the ball.

I miss dodgeball....

If you let the ball go before the other ball hit your body, I would say that you are in and the teammate comes in. If you dropped the ball as the ball came to you, I would say: You are out, Teammate comes in, other guy is out.

you caught the ball thrown the ball you dropped should have nothing to do with the play.
