There are two types of embossing - wet and dry.
Wet embossing - you stamp an image and then pour embossing powder over it. Then you heat it with a heat tool. The powder melts and creates a raised image.
Dry embossing - you place a stencil beneath your card and use a stylus to trace the image, creating a raised image on the other side of the card.
Do a yahoo search for the kind of embossing you're interested in and a ton of great sites come up.

Have you tried the various craft companies on line? They all have lots of good ideas and frequently sell items for less than you can buy them in the store. Also there must be someone in your area who sells various scrap booking items. These people frequently have open house situations where you can learn many things and have all your questions answered. Also, you will make friends with other people with similar interests.
