if i shim the bottom of the tub to get the lip level will the tub drain properly or should i angle it a bit?

The first answer is absolutely correct, so is the second. The tub should be designed to drain with the rim level, however I always like to give a little extra push.
As for these shims you are using, The preferred method is to set the tub in a bed of mortar. It makes it feel more solid, and keeps the water warm longer in a bath. It is cheap, and will prevent cracks in the finish.

I would shim it like you said to get the drain level with the tub, but I would also shim it just alittle higher in the back to keep water from pooling towards the back of the tub. You could use a level for this. Good Luck

Put The Tub In Level. Bottom of tub has slope for drainage from manufacture

The tub should be installed level. The bottom was manufactured to drain properly.

Always install your tubs level, the manufacture has alrady given the inside of the tub fall for it to drain.

Set the tub level. It is manufactured to be level and any extra pitch isn't needed. Don't reinvent the wheel. If you want to insulate, add insulation in any open cavity that you can add it. Good luck
