I drive a 1998 hyundai elantra 1.6 GLS. the car has benn running smoothly for a very long time due to a good maintenance service record. Recently i noticed that when traveling at a speed of
130 km/h, the gear shifts from five to the neutral position. The gear lever sort of kicks down from fifth gear on its own as if pushed or jerked by something to the neutral/idle position. Mind you this happens with my foot only on the acclelrator and not touching the clutch. What could be the cause of this? the other gears 1 up to 4 run smoothly without latching off except for No 5 which latches off at the above mentioned speed. Does my gear box have a problem.? I dont know how the gears are linked so that when shifting the lever does not kick back. The only way is if i keep my hand on the gear lever and hold it in place(fifth gear) when driving at speeds above 130 km/h. Pliz advice,i know i have to pay the nearest mechanic a visit but i just want to know before hand what might be the cause..thanx

Do you drive often in 5th gear?

If you do, the 5th is used up.
usualy it hapends first with the revers gear.
It will cost you!

If you shift don't "push" it, do it with love your transmision will last longer, use the cluch where it's made for, but on the other hand it's a hyundai.

You need a new gerebox. Chek the oil, level is to bottom off drifeshafts, best to drane oill ant refil, it may well be no oil or full off water, eiver way you need gearbox, but aft jumping out gere next is seeze up or get too gere togever which is Big bang and maybe crash.

you will could get the pipes drained. usually while pumping a grab too lots, you incredibly capture greater air bubbles in the hoses that link inflicting greater harm than doing sturdy. The preliminary pump of the grab fluid gets by and then be blocked by ability of the air which has nowhere to bypass to. many times grab fluid does not could get replaced that usually in any respect, despite the fact that while it does get to drain that's appropriate to have a mechanic do the interest because of the fact the air would have equipped up.

Could be a linkage problem and that wouldn't cost much, but I 'm certain its not the gearbox, a simple broken spring on the linkage could be the problem. Good luck.

Hyundai, hmmm. don't they have 10 year/100,00 mile warranties? Check on that, could save you a new transmission bill.
