Because the earth is tilted at an angle of about 23.5 degrees (it varies slightly) there are times when the polar regions are tilted away from the sun and are in continual darkness, at other times they're facing into the sun and get continual daylight. At it's extreme 'night-time' can last for 4 months, as too can 'day-time'.

In some places the first appearance of the spring sun is a much awaited event and is greeted with celebrations.
