I have heard of going hunting with ferrets- for ground squirrels/gophers, etc, and it sounds pretty interesting.

Anyone else do it or know of any good websites I can look at for tips in training?
Thanks in advance.

My ferret comes from a line of hunting ferrets. I dont use him for hunting (to soft) he lives loose with me in my appartment, like a little dog!

For hunting in the UK there main use is for rabbits, that land owners and farmers count as pests because they kee digging holes in there land (animals breaking legs in them, like horses etc)

The basic way is the rabbit has 2 holes to its burrow.. one way in one way out.

Ferret hunters will stick a net one end and the ferret down the other. The ferret will chase the rabbit out and into the net. Then you got ur bunny.

There are problems of loosing the ferret down the whole, but this genally just depends on how good the ferret is at his job.

I don't believe hunting with a ferret in the states is encouraged. If it is, you would need a permit and a ferret that has been trained. This is something that is done in Great Britain and some places in Europe, though it is gradually falling out of favor and practice. The ferrets in question there are raised on raw meat and know how to hunt. Generally, the US ferrets are so domesticated they have no idea what to do with raw meat, let alone live prey. Also, as mentioned, there is some danger to the ferret and the chance of losing it, as they have to go down holes after rabbits. Ferreters oft times have to carefully dig their ferret out and in rain there is chance of drowning and tunnel collapse. A working ferret tends to have a shortened life. IMHO, I'd keep the ferret as a pet and leave hunting to the dogs.

Oh my gosh, that's hilarious! I just had the funniest visual of a ferret pointing like a pointer or labrador. ha, anyway, take a ferret out in the wild and chances are its going to be the hunted, not the hunter.

i don't recomend it with domesticated ferrits bought in petstores. it would probebly run off on you, and i don't think it is worth the risk. what you could do is teach him tricks that are similar to hunting. like a maze or following a little mouse. it sounds like things to do wth a cat, but cats are hunters and that is what they do to hunt prey in the wild. be creative and make sure it is as fun for you as it is with your ferrit.
