It's based on 10s, 100s, 1000s, etc. So you don't have to remember that there are 5280 feet in a mile and 12 inches in a foot.
There is only one name for each property. kilogram for mass, Newton for force, meter for length. American system has numerous names for everything, such as pounds, ounces, tons or inches, miles, feet.
All metric units can be calibrated to a perfect master specimen in France.
