Siramawo Bandaranaike (1916 - ) Prime Minister of Sri Lanka 1960-65; 1970-1977, and President of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, Her husband, Solomon Bandaranaike, was prime minister of Ceylon from 1956 until his assassination in 1959, Mrs Bandaranaike became the world's first woman prime minister when she led her party to victory in 1960. She received overwhelming support when she was again returned as prime minister in 1970. socially conscious, despite an aristocratic upbringing, he has often allied herself to Marxist groups. In her first ministry (1960-65) she nationalised private schools., Western oil companies, and sectors of the rubber industry. She improved health and education services, and boosted her popularity by greatly increasing the rice ration. In foreign affairs she strengthened links with communist countries although she upheld Sri Lanka's policy of non-alignment. In the 1977 election she was defeated by Richard Jaywardene of the United National Party after allegations of nepotism were levelled against her. In 1986 her political rights, denied her from 1980 were restored.
Golda Meir (1898 - 1978) - Prime Minister of Israel (Second)
Israeli politician; originally Golda Mabovitz; born in Kiev, Russia but brought up from 1906, in Milwaukee, USA. She became an active Zionist, emigrated to Palestine in 1921, worked for the trade union movement (Histadruth), and took part in the struggle for independence as head of the political department of the Jewish Agency, 1946-48. Mrs Meir was Israel's first ambassador to the USSR, 1948-49, minister of labour, 1949-56, foreign minister, 1956-66, and secretary of Mapai (the Israeli Labour party), 1966-68. She became prime minister after the death of Levi Eshkol in 1969, a post she held until her resignation in 1974. Often held up as the symbol of a self-dependent Israel, perhaps her finest hour was successfully guiding Israel through the 1973 Arab-Israeli War.
