I've been in every type of home entertainment repair for 30 plus years, been in PC repair for the last 15 years extensively and can tell you that one of the major breakdowns of ANY equipment that has any kind of heat dissipation usually takes a dump due to circuit board stress. This occurs when the heating and cooling of a circuit board expands and contracts the board. It happens in PCs, TVs, Stereos, you name it. The problem it causes is poor circuit board solder joints! Number one cause of failure! It also creates fatigue in some circuit componenets and especially in carbon resistors. I've seen it hundreds of times! I never turn off any of my PCs and very seldom turn the TV off! I WILL however suggest that you turn your laptops off as they can be a fire hazard. This brings me to another common myth! Turning your equipement off during a thunderstorm. Dont waste your time unless you are willing to go to the extremes of unplugging it from the phoneline, wall receptacle, cable, and antenna wire because a hi voltage spike from a lightning bolt has no conscience about blowing the bejeesus out of something that is simply turned off! It doesnt care! Its out to get to ground and WILL find the shortest possible path and DOES NOT care if your equipment is turned off or not! Its GONNA go through it!

At work we leave our computers on. That is still the general rule of thumb. We turn the monitors off at night though. I tell my users to reboot at least once a week.

This if for computers that are used daily for 8 or 9 hours a day. If you do not use your home computer that much, I'd say turn it off.If you're just using it a couple hours a day and not every day.

Well if it's a laptop I suggest restarting daily because it can get overheated and things start going slowly and get messed up if its not shut down every now and then. As for desktops, you don't need to turn it off every day, but don't leave it on for too long while you're not using it; although it won't start acting up for awhile, it's still sucking electricty and with global warming and everything.....

Think of it like this....when you shut a computer down it's like giving it a good nights sleep....how long would you like to live without sleeping?

Recently People are estimated that switched on computers and bulbs in the world may cause the global warming... I guess really they are producing that much heat in this world... So keep your systems and other electricals switched off when they are not in use....

if you are just leaving your computer for a little while, it's ok to just put it on standby or hibernate because then you can leave whatever you were doing and then come back to it later. but if you are going to sleep or just not using it for the rest of the day, it's ok to turn it off.

I turn it off if I am not going to be on for a while or sometimes Stand-by. I NEVER leave it on with the internet running because of viruses...I don't know if makes a difference, but it makes sense to me.

Dr. House is right on the nose.

One aspects of viruses and spyware, is that they often take advantage of computer restarts to make their infection deeper into your computer. Keep ypur anti-virus and anti-spyware programs up to date, and run scans regularly.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

My brother's best friend is a graduate of M.I.T , who comes down every summer. We asked this exact question when we bought our own pc, and he recommended every 3-5 days it be given break, or at least be on stand by mode, but no more than a week and a half.

in my opinion, it is better to leave it on, if you keep turning it on and off, then its just like turning a light bulb on and off. it can shorten the life of the power supply. so my suggestion is to leave it on
