When I was a realtor I took my home inspection classes back in 1995. It was a 3 day course and cost around $500, and then I was certified. At the time only Texas had licensing for it which required another test. Obviously that could have changed by now. The designation you're looking for is CSI I believe. (foggy brain)

The classes were fascinating. Lots of things I never would have considered like calibration of ovens, counting hail dings in shingles, what to look for in an electrical box or the wiring, how to test outlets, you name it.

At the time the going rate was around $200-$300 bucks. I never ended up using the skills since the area of the midwest I lived in wasn't into home inspections yet and found it a waste of money. Now it's practically mandatory to buy a house.
