If somebody hurts you or a family member, then you would probably hate them and hold a grudge against them. A grudge is more of a long LONG term hatred for someone and wanting to get revenge. You may pick at each other and fight often and no matter what they do or say it's hard to "let a grudge go".

It means you hold a negative feeling against a person and don't trust them for something bad that you think they've done. For example a lady publicly humiliated me once because she believed I didn't spend enough time with my SIL when she was dying of cancer and this woman bailed me up in a busy shopping centre and decided to make a spectacle of me in public by yelling. I hold a grudge against her as I don't trust her any more and I retain very negative feelings of distrust. I am a quiet, private person and was embarrassed as most of what she said was untrue anyway but it happened and you don't know who's watching. So, I hold a grudge. Get what I mean?
