My 6 months old baby wakes up every 1-2 hours at night. We can settle him and get him back to sleep by patting him or give him a dummy. How can we stop him waking up so often ?

Does your baby have sleeps during the day? Does he have a routine through out the day?
I have a 9mth old as well as 3 other children and have never had a problem with them sleeping.
At 6mths old they're routines are usually changing and most times you can get them into having 2 sleeps during the day(morning & afternoon) then put them down at a time that suits you at night.
For my daughter she used to have a bottle in the evening at about 7-8pm and between 9-10pm I would top her up with another bottle and put her to bed where she would sleep until about 6-6:30am.
Now she is 9mths old and has her last bottle at 8pm and sleeps until 7-8am the next morning.
I've never had to give my children rice cereal to help them sleep.

6 months old is just the time when most experts reccomened that babies start to fall asleep by himself so if he settles down already with a pacifier and a back rub then just keep with it and maybe try to reduce your contacts slowly.

Perhaps try rubbing him for shorter times, and then stop and just stand by him talking then slowly talk from further away int he room, then outside of the room.

If he nurses he is going to wake up more often at night but either way 1-2 hours is pretty often. Sometimes baboes don't liek the big spaces either and will jerk in their sleep. They are to big to be swaddled at that age but they have these foam pillows you can buy and lay them on that may make him feel more secure.

Also make sure he is good and tired during the day, not to many naps and exciting activites not jsut playing in a play pen and watching tv. Try to relax him in the evening with dim lights or a bath.

My son will be 6 months next week and I get him to sleep all night by giving him a warm bath and a bottle with a little cereal in it then I play with him for about 10-20 minutes until he falls asleep and he sleeps all night long. Hope this works for you. Good Luck.

Stop rewarding his waking habit with your attention. Take away the pacifier. Put him to bed at the same time every night, sleepy, full, and clean. Close the door and DON'T GO BACK TILL MORNING. Do NOT go in when he cries. This will be torture for you but it will only last probably 3 days, maybe a week.
I have raised 7 babies, I know what I am talking about.

Babies need to learn to fall back to sleep on their own. Place several pacifiers around the crib and let him find one by himself. Make sure you are feeding him some rice cereal before bed so he does not get hungry in the middle of the night.

You have to let him cry himself back to sleep, he needs to learn to comfort himself. What are you giving him to eat right before bed?
If you are giving him baby food or baby cereal, try giving that to him around the same time you eat yor dinner and give him 6-8 oz of formula or breastmilk right before bed. Also, try giving him a relaxing bath with lavender soap..not a fun, play-time bath, but one filled with soft voices and light touches. Good Luck
