I have a Emachine computer Windows Xp Home Edition. the other night when i was creating a powerpoint, I went to view the slideshow and all of a sudden the computer just shut off. i went to unplug the surge protector from the wall that had the monitor, tower, and printer connected to it, so i unplugged it and plugged it back in the light surrounding the power button was on but when i pressed the button to turn the computer on the power supply or fan would not come on the only thing that would start was the printer and the monitor the next morning i tried to plug it in and the light wouldnt even come on i unplugged it and yesterday i tried to plug it in and see if it would work and it wouldnt but the light came on this time. please tell me what is wrong with my computer, if i need to buy a new power supply, or what might be the problem.

Thanks in advance,

Hi. Try plugging the computer right into an outlet and see if the fans come on. You may have a bad surge suppressor. If the power supply is a cheap one and you feel comfortable replacing it (not really that hard) that would be my next step.

Yes, a new power supply is where I would start, they can be quite unreliable. It's also possible your motherboard has failed, but you won't be able to tell that until you replace the power supply unfortunately.

Replacing a power supply is relatively straightforward if you're comfortable with that kind of thing. Just remember where all the plugs went, before you remove the old power supply.

My dad managed it on his own, so it must be quite easy!

emachines are known for having power supply problems. It might be that. Before buying a new one, I'd try swapping your power supply with one you know is good if you can.
