It looks very good. It has many new features which make it look very modern and sleek. However, it doesn't do anything more than xp. The downside to it is that it uses a lot of resources, so you need to make sure your hardware, ie.. processor and memory are fast and big enough to handle vista. I have been using it for about 3 weeks now, and honestly I wouldn't mind switching back to xp, since a lot of softwares that I like are not compatible with vista yet.

My setup... 2.8 Ghz Dual Core, 4 GB RAM, 128 Radeon X600
This machine ran fast with anything I could throw at it. Until, Vista, that is.
I installed Vista Ultimate (upgrade over XP) and the damn thing crawled to a snails pace. There was a driver conflict that caused the machine to start itself over about 3x a day. The biggest resource pig was IE7.
Anyway, I decided to do a fresh install, and that was MUCH better. I was able to run my machine and not have it restart itself in the middle of common tasks. And it seems to run faster now.
First bit of advice is DONT upgrade from XP. Do a fresh install. Don't worry about losing your files, either, since the fresh install moves all your files to directory. You don't have to re-format your drive. The first time I installed as an upgrade, it took about 5 hours. The second time, as fresh install, took about 45 minutes.
Speech recognition. They have upgraded the speech recognition so that it is actually workable. It's pretty cool! My girlfriend thought I was crazy talking to my computer, but once she saw what it could do, she was blown away.
Aero is okay, but I don't think the UI is visually that great. However, the OS offloads the window rendering to the video card, which really frees up system resources and gives the UI a smooth appearance. I am waiting for application developers to write programs that take advantage of the graphics engine. I am certain very cool apps will be coming out that will blow you away.
File manager is only marginal improvement over XP. The search feature resembles OS X.
The 3d Chess game that comes with it will certainly replace solitaire as the global default time waster.
Remote desktop has been updated and includes encryption. It wish it had some of the features of the VNC derivatives, however, such as proportional screen resize.
The task manager is more informative than it was before, and there is a resource monitor that provides you with detailed info about the operation of all your hardware resources. There is more info about process that are running, and you have more control over what is allowed to run.
The firewall is much more practical, if you know what you are doing. (I am a software engineer) I don’t think the normal home user is going to know how to properly configure the firewall rules.
Was it worth the 250 bucks? Probably not. But it is tax write off for me, so I don’t care. However, I do believe that it will improve over time. And once the new programming paradigms are picked up by application developers, new and exciting programs will come out that will be really cool.

It's something that takes some getting used to. It took me a few days to get used to it because, I was so used to XP. Now I love it. The upside it, that graphics and the way the files are set up are even better than XP but, the downside is, you have to burn files to a disc instead of just being able to copy them.

I used it today for a while and although it's good, I get the feeling it could get slow and clunky unless you have a very high spec pc.
