What does the term "[insert name]'s last stand" mean?

It was originally Custer's Last Stand.

General Custer (George Custer, I think) who made an unsuccessful last stand against some Native Americans and he got killed.

Little Big Horn, I think.

Anyway, it's a last-ditch effort that's probably doomed (and if you know it WAS doomed, you can use it looking back in time and say, oh, that was so and so's last stand.)
