When asked where do I come from I have 3 options. England, Great Britain or the United Kingdom. We do this just to confuse foreigners (joke).
The reasons are England conquered Wales and England and Wales became Great Britain although people were still English and Welsh. Many years later we all joined with Scotland and became the united kingdom and Ireland.
So I am English from England which is part of Great Britain with Wales, making me also British and which in turn is part of the United Kingdom with Scotland and Northern Ireland. The British Isles consists of England, Wales and Scotland, I'm really not sure whether Ireland is also included now.
Hope this is less confusing to you than it is to me.
