I was at the pet store today and noticed a Betta fish on display in a small (2 gallon... I think) tank with a filter running. I didn't think Bettas were supposed to live that way. Is it okay? If so, I may think about buying my Betta a new home.

Yes they can, they are actually supposed to live that way but most people would rather them slowly die in a filthy un filtered death trap of a bowl.

i keep my bettas -- a lot of them -- in 2 1/2 gallon tanks with no filter. I change the water weekly. If your betta is in a bowl of a gallon or less and you put him in a 2 1/2 gallon you will think you just got a new pet. they swim around and like it a lot.

A great deal of people have bettas in a community tank, without other bettas. The only reason why people have bettas in such a small tank is because they can breathe air, but a small tank like what you see them in stores isn't ideal either.
I had one betta in a tank with a mini filter, but it was too big for him and he would get stuck swimming by it, so I took it out.
But bettas can definitely have a filter in their tank.

I have 2. They can do either way. I just have mine in a bowl that I clean pretty often, though. I actually think a filter would be better. Then you wouldn't have to be taking the fish out so much and cleaning so much. It probably just puts stress on them each time you change their water. As I'm sure you know since you have one, it only takes 3 or so days for their water to be dirty again w/o a filter.

The purple sea nano is the smallest accessible. you're able to get a bigger tank , and in case you do no longer prefer a 'carry close on the lower back' filter out, you are able to bypass with a sponge filter out, which sits underwater in the tank and is asserted to an air pump to help draw water by it.

Sure they can! Filter tanks are always better than unfiltered. As long as the current from the filter isn't too strong and just blows the fish around the tank that is. Heated is far better too.

bettas can live in a tank with a filter or without it even. mine lives in a two gallon tank with an air stone. we also have had one live in a goldfish bowl. check out what their natural habitat is on the net.

yeah why not?
you should get a heater to incase you ever decide to breed them

listen to magic man and G
only thing is (onceagain)
make sure the filter isnt to strong and is sucking the betta in
and depending the type of filter that the water coming out isnt pushing it around either

Yes, I keep mine in tanks with filters. It just seems to reduce how often you change the water. That goes for bigger tanks, too. You still have to change it though.

I don't know the answer to that question but I do know that bettas can't live in the same tank. My Nana used to own them and she said bettas will fight with each other if put in the same tank.
