I'm getting a new bates caprilli saddle. I've never cleaned or oiled tack before. Do I have to oil it once I get it so that it'll break in? Or do I have to clean it and then oil it? I also heard from several owners of this saddle not to use neatsfoot oil because it breaks down the leather of this particular saddle. Is there another oil I can use that's safe for this saddle?

I have never oiled any of my tack ever. I have been riding for over 8 years and own 8 saddles. I use whatever saddle soap is the cheapest at the time. If you must oil your tack, use neatsfoot oil. If you buy good quality leather then you shouldn't need to oil it. By the price of the bates caprilli it should be darn good leather.

No offense but if your getting a bates and you've never cleaned tack before your kinda screwed! But here are some tips! A saddle might break in itself you don't always have to oil a saddle! But if you do clean it first and go light on the oil if you put too much on you'll be sliding all over the place when you ride! Go to your local tack store and ask about what kind of oil to use! (I have had 3 saddles before)

Your Bates saddle isn't any more special than other saddles.

Clean it with glycerin soap (Leather New) or vegetable soap (Murphy's Oil Soap) and condition it with a beeswax cream or yes, you can use neatsfoot oil, you just don't use it often or soak it.

People who've ruined their tack with neatsfoot oil just use it too much, in which case any cream or conditioner will do that.

Clean your saddle with a damp cloth after every use. Clean it with the soap weekly/monthly and condition it only ONCE or TWICE a year.

Use a saddle soap (i like Lexol) and then condition it. Just because it is nice leather does not mean it does not need conditioner. Actually, i find that fine leather needs more conditioner than thick cheep leather alot of the time b/c it cracks more easily. I clean and condition every week because i clean after every ride. Saddle soap takes alot of the moister out of the leather so you have to replenish it with conditioner. I have a Pessoa and this method has worked very well on it! Expensive leather should be conditioned just as much as other leather, especially for the price we pay for it!
