I always pretend I'm sick, wait until a day before and call and, in a sick voice, coughing occasionally, say "I'm so sorry, I really wanted to *cough* go to your party but I'm just *coughcough* so sick! It sucks, and *cough* I'm sorry!" Once they hear you're sick, they'll feel all bad and be like, "Oh it's okay, I hope you feel better!" Also, a few days before you call, keep commenting on how your stomache hurts, you feel dizzy, or have a scratchy throat.

I would kindly and gently explain the reasons I didn't want to go and let them know you hope it doesn't harm your friendship.
