Films - Clouseau...

Books - Matt Scudder, Burke or Stephanie Plum (yeah I know she isn't strictly speaking a detective).

Actually no - I prefer the modern day ones, like Mcgyver or Dempsey & Makepeace. Sherlock's methods were all based on deduction (like Poirot). I prefer a bit of action while they're solving crimes - I'm afraid "whodunnits" aren't for me.

Columbo

I always loved Sherlock - guy had class, and he would easily intimidate people around him because of his intellect. But I quite like Columbo just because he's so sweet and unassuming and then he's all "just one more thing sir/madam" and that's when he make his big reveal.

Mine is not Sherlock ... it's the French "reporter" Rouletabille in Gaston Lenoir stories.
