I'm 16 and go to high school in England. I witnessed an assault on a friend a while ago and im due to appear in court soon. The guy who did it has found out the names of the witnesses and he's been asking questions round school trying to find out about me. If we got in a fight I'd stand a good chance of winning one on one but he's always got a gang of cronies with him. He's also the type who finds it fun to carry knifes and he has connections to 18-20 year olds through his brother, who have been known to hunt down anyone that wrongs him. I'm going to do the witness thing anyway but i want to know the best course of action regarding the guy. If he personally comes up to me and threatens me should i just hit him right then and there and just accept the consequences or should i try and talk my way out of it. I can't afford to waste the time it takes to press charges if anything happens with GCSE's coming up and i don't want to jeopardise my value as a witness.
Whats the best way?

You need to talk with the DA that is prosecuting the assault case. There should be a representative from that office that deals with witnesses & can help you. They need to be made aware that this guy is trying to use "intimidation" whether overt or implied to get witnesses to recount or refuse to testify. This is a serious situation. It doesn't mean that you are "afraid " b/c you don't hit him, you shouldn't be forced to mar your own reputation b/c of this guy. IF however, he hits you first, by all means, take up for yourself and give him the beating of his life.......
Kudo's to you for being a stand up person!

Report him to the the Headmaster of the school and also to the law , he is not allowed to tamper with a witness or question your situation. He should learn to take his punishment, do not allow him to antagonize you into any aggressive behavior. This would affect your status as as a witness. Two wrongs do not make a right and he is deliberately trying to get you into trouble ,do not let him win, walk away.

dude i can understand how you feel so my advice to you is and this is honestly how i feel. you should approach him and punch his azz dead in the face and beat his azznot just fight him but make a statement, it is better to get the jump on him cause he isnt expecting it then in return tell a teacher, police officer etc what you did and why, he wil torment no one anymore because everyone will see hegot whoopoed as far as his brothers and 20 year olds punk is a punk dont let age dictate fear and if you whoop his *** see how many people will want to hang with the new bad guy in school.

I would call the investigator you have been working with and tell them this guy knows your going to be a witness and has been asking questions at school about you and that you feel threatened. They'll let you know what to do.

nicely Carla, I, as with many others the following, disagree with you. i locate Salacious Crumb's comments to be witty and on course. I hardly ever study one and not using a minimum of a laugh. i'd advise that you would no longer be as sensible as you imagine you're in case you do not comprehend his solutions.

Let the prosecutor and the cops know. If anything happens, at least the right people will know and make dumbasses trial that much more uncomfortable.
