You do not need to offer him formula in a cup - just offer water in a cup and continue to breastfeed on demand until YOU decide you are done or he decides he is done - not when other people tell you you should be done. Breastfeeding past 1 year is often called Extended Breastfeeding and there is a lot of support information online for EBF.

The baby will wean himself when he is ready! What's the rush?
Seriously, any additional food or drink right now is just for experimentation. Breastmilk should be the main source of nutrition for the first year and a hefty part of the second year. It is way better than formula or cow's milk. Formula tastes nasty, especially when the babe is used to real milk from you.

You've made it 7 months, what's a few more?
Not only does formula taste NASTY, but it's expensive too!
Keep breastfeeding your little one until he is at least a year old, and then start thinking about weaning.
The kellymom links are great, and be sure to keep in mind that breastfeeding is considerably more healthy for your baby, plus it's healthier for you!!! Breastfeeding for 24 months will cut your risk of breast cancer in HALF! How cool is that?!?

I nursed and pumped, when my son was little. At about 10 months, he stopped taking the expressed milk from his sitter but I still nursed in the morning and at night. At about 12 months, he stopped nursing at night, and at 14 months he stopped altogether. When he refused two days in a row is when I figured that he was done.
I had no pain from stopping nursing because he was weaned slowly instead of an abrupt stop.

Well you can do it pretty much whenever you want. I'd start with maybe finding a breast pump if you don't have one (even a manual one, they're cheaper and you wont use it much, or rent one from the hospital)... and you can mix half formula and half breast milk, or even start with 3/4 breast milk and the rest formula until he's used to the taste. (If that's what you think it is) Just be persistant or else he won't take it seriously and he'll just cry until you give in again!

HAVE YOU TASTED FORMULA, the other day I decided to open one of the free cans i got at the hospital, i was going to water down some steamed veggies with it. I tried a little sip of it and almost puked. I decided not to spoil the veggies with it. Why cant you continue breast feeding?

Formula does taste bad... have you smelled it? I would breastfeed until he can be switched to cow's milk (1 year).

Breast milk is recommended for the first year you should start weening at 11-11 1/2 months unless he has teeth! He is still bonding with you so breast feeding is encouraged.

Some people breastfeed until the child is 2 years old. For me I was sick and then my daughter was sick and refussed to breastfeed anymore she wanted her bottle. So I think the best advice would be to wait until you and your child are ready. You will know.
