hmmm.

i dont think you wont ever find a place at that price. imagine you have to think about your daily expenses too plus all the new york stress. believe me sweetie, i work at midtown 5th ave.. ive been wanting to live in manhattan for a long time now "if i have the money" but it looks like you dont wanna stretch your fortune. a studio in soho right now cost $1800 and up and that depends the size too. i live in queens and it the best place to be at... my train take me 15 mins only and no hassle. very peaceful... if you really insist, walk around soho to 65th (uptown is way cheaper) walk through apartments, speak people, friends, landlords on apt bldngs cause they know better... asked for rent-stabilized bldngs (rent that is fix) look at signs.. posters.. university bulletin, etc. let everybody know ur looking for a place.. (its a chain-reaction & word of mouth) but remember you have to shed extra money for deposit, security, utilities, etc or better find friends to join you or room mates. dont got to websites that requires money... some are just BS or if ever try goin to www.nytimes.com.. i know a lot of people who live in manhattan that wants to get out here now (some move to queens or long island) unless you're a party girl, so then... this is were u belong!!! fand oh, i heard if you are an immigrant.. goverment helps you with expenses and hook you up with nice apartments in town.

good luck sweetie.

I am a Realtor and the best advice is to stay away from dot coms or apartment finders in general. What I would recommend is to use a reputable Brokerage. Typically, apartment searches and dot coms are not up to date and generally will find you the most expensive properties. Since you are the renter, it costs you nothing to use a brokerage, the owner pays any fees, so you don't have to worry about getting ripped off.

I am not in Manhattan, but if you need help finding a brokerage, I'd be glad to do a search and give you a few suggestions, and almost all well known brokerages have websites with property search links. Good luck!

I'm not sure of the schools (although i hear UWS schools are crowded from parents) but I can tell you all about real estate as a former real estate secretary in nyc. As the other poster said, expect at least 5k for a 3 bed in that area. Central Park as a whole is surrounded by Upper West and East Sides which are easily some of the most expensive areas in the city. Harlem is at the top of central park as well and is nice in that area. Not cheap but cheaper than UWS and UES. I would say unless one of you makes about 40 times the monthly rent of on avg. 5k then go for a walk-up because the luxury places surrounding the park usually has that requirement. Craigslist is your best bet and consider branching to other areas. Most nyer's travel daily on the train. Brooklyn is nice and cheaper. The best family area in my opinion is Queens because there is more open space, grass per home, diverse, safe and its cheaper. I have friends who have a 3 bed, 2 bath right near a university for 1500/month vs. manhattan's shoebox sized studios for 1500/month.

You want to live in Manhattan between SoHo and 65 street and pay $1,500....scratching my head.....good luck! Manhattan is some of the most expensive real estate in NYC. For that kind of money Idon't think you're going to find much or if you do it won't be in a great area (Alphabet City comes to mind). You might want to consider a roommate - Village Voice ads might help.

Like you just said, Craigslist is really your best bet. If you go to realty companies they will charge you A TON (sometimes a month and a half rent) when they find you a place (That would be $2200 for you!). Judging by your name I would guess you want to be in a fun fashion area, So I would suggest either Chelsea or Tribecca, look in those areas and you can probably find a decent place for that range.

Just as an FYI, when you live in Manhattan you are paying manly for the convience of living in Manhattan, Don't be preparred to find a place like where Carrie lives in Sex and the City. In fact, throw that whole show out the window b/c Manhattan is nothing like that ;-)

YES...and the best advise is that you can look for apartments in Union City, West New York, Jersey City or North Bergen: all this towns are across the Hudson river in New Jersey where the rents are half of New York's' and it 's just 15 to 20 minutes away from The Big Apple. Good Luck!

Hi, I live in Manhattan and scored my awesome, UES Jr one bedroom for $1600 on CRAIGS LIST. I found a one owner guy to rent it to me with NO brokers fees, NO application fees, and NO credit check!! Most single owners list on CL because it's cheap and a quicker way to the masses. In my perspective, BROKERS ARE A WASTE OF GOOD MONEY, and so are realtors, as they only usually work for big co-op management companies or corporations that will triple your rent and deposits in fees. Find the one in a million landlord like I did and you will be able to save tons of money, just give it time. ALSO, $1500 is NOT TOTALLY unheard of for the neighborhoods you want to live in. Don't listen to anyone on here that tells you that you can't find what you are looking for, I am living proof that you CAN!! Also, don't listen to people that are telling you to live in Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx. When I came to the city I promised myself I would not settle for the boroughs cuz that AIN'T where the action is! If you have to take a train, a bus, or a tunnel to get to Manhattan, IT AIN'T THE SAME! Stick to your guns, I love living in Manhattan and would have it no other way, and by the way people, I live only 5 blocks from the park for my rent! Damn ex NYer pessimists, give the girl a break!!! :) Good luck hon, maybe we will be neighbors! :)

move to long island lol ud probably find a place in queens or more out east for about 1500 ...right now my family lives in a basement apartment for 1200 a month...and thats cheap..i have never seen anything that cheap for a minute.

My sister rented out a room at someones house for 600 a month..so you can find stuff like that..but u would probably have to look into local papers..like the yankeeclipper.com or the pennysaver , the carrier. try looking on those websites for rental information and see what u can come up with. It really is expensive to live in Manhattan and i think u can find a decent place to live in long island IMHO. :)

Many people have moved to either Brooklyn or Staten Island and traveled a few more minutes per day rather than live in Manhattan, due to the cost and congestion of living in Manhattan.

Call a few real estate agencies who deal with apartments in downtown Brooklyn. You may be pleasantly surprised with the results.

I suggest going to nytimes.com. It has a great reality section all about New York City. You will definitely find something there. Good luck and, by the way, $1,500 will get you Lower East side, not Soho.
