If light bulbs are OK to use (no candles/flames), a very easy and very pretty way is to get some wooden needlework hoops (one per lantern), some 8"-12" lengths of stiff, thin wire (three or four pieces per lantern should be plenty), and some assorted pastel-colored tissue paper at the crafts store. Cut various colors of tissue paper into strips of roughly the same width and length, about 1-1½" wide by 10-12" long was good for me. Glue one end of one strip onto the outside rim of an INNER (smaller) hoop, then glue another strip beside it, and another, all the way around the hoop, and then put on the outer hoop and close it. Leave the bottom ends of the paper strips hanging loose. Now, if I've explained this clearly, if you hold the loop level, you'll have the strips of colored paper hanging down to form a cylindrical "shade." Let the glue dry for a while. Then just take the wires and make hooks/hangers to suspend the "shade" from just above the light bulb, so that the bulb's surrounded, but not touched, by the paper strips. Voilá! It's much easier to do than to explain, and the effect is very nice.

Mason jars will likely be too heavy for use as hanging lanterns. I'm assuming you mean those strings of patio lanterns that you see in some backyards.
I would suggest using the large christmas lights, and you can use plastic peanut butter jars (labels removed) which can be spray painted with a translucent paint.

they have some paper lanterns at cost plus and/or Michael's crafts stores.. u can get watercolor and paint flowers and stuff on it...
or if u do tissue paper, same concept, or you can cut out shapes in diff color tissue paper, glue or string onto the background of white tissue paper...
maybe u can try weaving long slips of paper too.. different colors. have some facing vertically, and then weave the horizontal ones in and out until you get a sheet of paper...
good luck!
