My laptop is broken. In order to retrieve a few .wps and .rtf files, I took it to a local repair shop. I told them specifically that these were the only files I wanted.

After a few days, I went back to the store to pick it up. The guy who worked on it then informed me in an offhand manner that he had viewed other, unrelated files on my hard drive, and knew of the contents. Bear in mind that there was no serious financial or personal information involved. However, should I be angry with this?

Completely. If they were hired for the specific tasks of recovering certain file types there is no need for them to do anything but that. Retreiving .wps and .rtf (or any file type) is as simple as scanning the hard drive for those files, and than copying them. Absolutely no need to go and do anything further than that.

In all of my years of IT work I have never violated a person's trust in me or my work by doing, or viewing, anything other than what I was being paid to do.

I would contact the shop owner or manager and let them know what happened and what exactly the person said to you. And depending on the outcome, or how much you care to pursue it, file a claim with the Better Business Bureau or your local equivalent.

When you authorize someone to work on your computer, they are pretty much entitled to do whatever they need to do to find the problem, and that may entail looking at files, unless you specifically request otherwise, in which case it is up to their standard of ethics whether they do or not. If there was something you didn't want them to see, you should have encrypted or secured the files in a password protected zip file or something.

The guy sounds unprofessional anyway. I wouldn't use him again.

If you want to, you can. I think you could sue him for violation of privacy.
