That's because your cycle is APPROXIMATELY 28 days long.. and it varies from person to person.. So it will not be on the same day every month.

Most people have an occasional cycle that is shorter or longer than usual, so the day of your cycle that you ovulate can change that month, though if your cycles are regular, it should be fairly consistent from cycle to cycle. Your luteal phase (the time between when you ovulate and when you menstruate) is consitent-anywhere from ten to sixteen days, depending on your body, but the same each month. In other words, if you have a 12 day luteal phase, and a 28 day cycle, you can expect to ovulate on day 16 of your cycle. Suppose that one month, you're really really stressed and you get sick...you might ovulate late, on day 25, but because your luteal phase is 12 days, you'll menstruate on day 37.
I typically have a 29 day cycle, and a ten day luteal phase. I ovulate on day 19 of my cycle. During the winter holidays, we were travelling and under a lot of stress and so on, and I had two really long cycles (37 days each.) Because I monitored my other fertility signs (BBT, cervical mucous and cervical position/texture) I knew I hadn't ovulated yet, and I knew when Idid ovulate.

Yes, because it goes by when your period ends and usually only a 28 day cycle. Also, you usually ovulate between day 12 and day 16, so there is some give! Good Luck!
