Writing an animation which will hopefully be done in the next few months. One problem, the characters are in a train which has just gone over a cliff into a canyon and are plummeting to their doom. Any ideas of how to save them?
PS:It's set in the wild west so no high tec stuff

The carpet in the middle of the Aile gets stuck on a sharp point of rock, the passengers are able to cling on.
There is a river on the bottom of the canyon, they land on the roof, and somehow it stays afloat.
All the cow-boys start shooting their pistols, creating enough upward lift for a soft landing.
The canyon narrows, the train gets stuck.
Half way down the trains fall is interrupted by a red sign.

You show a flashback telling how the main characters got out of the train before it fell of a cliff

As the train falls, the canyon gets narrower, the train gets stuck in the canyon... the train slowly creeps down and suddenly falls but gets caught again,... then all the characters jump onto the roof of the train and slowly make their way to a little ledge on the side of the canyon... just as the last person is getting off.. the train slips and the guy makes a hell of a leap and just barely grabs the legde with single hand... the others help him up....
Then they all get abducted by aliens!!!!...

Could the train be too wide for half way down the canyon and become wedged. The people have to be hauled up or down.

Maybe it lands in a lake or river? The train would be twisted and seriously screwed up, but there would probably be quite a few damaged survivors...
Or maybe the floor of the canyon is wooded (like a forest) and the trees and branches break it's fall to an extent. Train would still be bent to hell but there would still probably be quite a few damaged passengers.

Since its the wild west you have to have someone w/a lasso. They can all grab the end of the rope. Have a charter lasso a tree or the bridge. Yea its been done before but swinging always looks cool. Good luck.

The passengers get all the bedding etc. from the sleeping car (assuming the train has one) and use it as padding to cushion themselves from the impact.

Since its probably a cool burning engine, they should try to harness the hot air from the boiler and create a kind of hot air balloon. They could probably get some big sheets from the dining cart to make the actual balloon...Once the make shift ballon is full, they could jump and land with some scraps and bruises.

um, bungee cords, Dark from Dnangel saves them (oops) or suddenly the hero discovers he has magical powers and somehow stops the train in midair.

yes the hero uses sand to stop the train and make it land nice and easy
