-Why is it some usb devices can only connect thru the main usb ports on the back of the computer and not thru a hub, even a powered one? More specifically, they react as if they are connected but Windows doesn't see them. How can it tell the difference?

I think your hub probably only supports USB 1.0 and the devices are USB 2.0. I'd almost be sure this is the problem if your USB hub is a couple years old. You probably need a newer one that is USB 2.0 speed.

Even though it is powered, some heavy duty devices(such as printers, etc) require enough power directly from the motherboard USB ports. A hub is meant for smaller, simpiler devices like digital camer connections etc.
