Call of the Wild by Jack London. It is short novel. Very emotional and full of adventures.

The Name of The Rose by Umberto Eco. It is a great portrait of the medieval times and a way to look the power of the scholatic way of thinking over people and at the same time the struggles within Catholic Church in those hard times.
