This question gets asked all the time on this site, and hardly any answerers ever get it right. That drives me nuts.

PLEASE, trust me on this one.

In the US, people use the term "college" to refer to both, but there is actually a difference.

A college is an institution that has a "college of arts and sciences," in which there are departments of study like English, Philosophy, Political Science, History, Biology, Chemistry, etc.

A university is a larger institution which is made up of several colleges, including the college of arts and sciences, but also including (for example) a college of business, a college of education, a college of fine arts, a college of engineering, etc.

In addition, while some (but not all) colleges have graduate programs in a certain few fields, universities usually have graduate programs in many fields, and may (but not necessarily) have a medical school and/or a law school.

The college additionally has a school of liberal arts and a school of drugs. besides, frequently faculties are purely undergrad faculties. faculties with graduate classes are frequently referred to as universities. There are faculties with graduate classes yet not lots. while you're going for an undergrad diploma it quite is nice to pass to a 4 twelve months college particularly of a school. regardless of the undeniable fact that, in Canada, a “college” is what's termed a “community college in the USA. For all practical purposes, there is no difference. Usually, a college must offer courses for Master's degrees to be considered a university. At the undergraduate level (Bachelor's degree), I think the larger universities use too many graduate students to teach the undergraduate classes.

I believe that a college is a school that is smaller than a university, and is usually private . I also believe that a university is a school that has been around for a 100 years and more. Don't forget, whereever you decided.. THERE ARE BOTH EXCELLENT TEACHERS AND HORRIBLE TEACHERS.. (It is not the name of the college that makes the students smarter, it is the teachers in the school that HELPS the students to become smarter.)
