I am reading a fictional book that puts forth some real far fetch ideas that it was created by an ancient intelligent race back when the Nile was a "wet climate" In fact he puts forth that a lot of the old wonders were built by these people.
In Ch 4 they address the sphinx. Thought to be built by Pharaoh Khafre in 2500B.C. But, they say the inventory stela found by Auguste Mariette was created before Khafre's reign. Second, It was carved out of huge sandstone much of which is below the desert the level of the surrounding desert. So, who would build something in an area that was going to constantly be buried by the sand? Finally, they say that the Sphinx has been eroded by water. They say there has not been enough rainfall to account for the amount. They also cite John Anthony West says both the Sphinx and the Osireion both show the same amount of erosion.
I am not saying I believe it, but there is some fuel for your fire.

They great pyramid was covered with polished white limestones and the sphinx was the head of a woman and the body of a lion. Virgo and Leo as the constellations are right above it at certain times. The pyramid was symbolic of a placed called Salem. It had twelve steps and looked more like a myan pyramid. At least it was when the "Egyptians" found it and settled there.

Egyptians 4500 years ago, no one knows which Pharoh was responsible, either Khufo or his son, both of which built a pyramid nearby. No one is really certain what it is supposed to represent either. It is built out of a solid rock and spent most of it's existance buried in sand.
