I am giving a speech on banning smoking in public areas and need opinions from other people. My research shows that by putting a ban out less people would be harmed from secondhand smoke.

Agree, Secondhand smoke is the most cause of lung cancer! I choose to not smoke and I hate it when someone smokes near me and their smoke comes in my direction. IT is only considerate if they'll pick an area where people are not going to pass by just because they like to smoke don't mean others should suffer.

I agree that smoking should be banned from public areas. Smoking should be done either in the home or outside on your owned property at least 20 ft away from someone Else's property or in the car with the windows up. I believe that people have the right to do what they want as long as it doesn't hurt other people, the rules that I stated above would do that. Statistics show that smoking kills more people in a year than alcohol and drug related incidences, vehicle crashes and disease put together. The smokers say they have rights (and they do) but non-smokers have the right to breathe clean air, we don't need to ban smoking (hopefully someday this will come to be) we just need to ban harming others. Statistics shouldn't even matter anymore, it's common sense. My dad is a smoker but he always goes in the back yard to smoke, he cares about his children's and wife's health. People don't realize that every time you so much as smell the scent of a cigarette it adds to the damage on your lungs. What kind of world do we live in now that we have to fight and argue when all we want is to breathe and be healthy....
I just thought of a great analogy, smoking kills more people per year that guns do right?....it's common sense that you shouldn't be shooting a gun in public cause you can potentially kill or harm someone, People dont have the right to shoot guns in public, why should smoking...something that kills more people per year, be ok to do in public. Take it where it's safe, at least for the non-smokers. Just like guns some day smoking will be banned. It's also funny how smokers complain about pollution. :)

I agree with Annie. I mean i personally think smoking is gross-it is basically paying to kill yourself and others. People walking by don't have to option whether or not to breathe in second-hand smoke. Also, people that have children and young babies or are pregnant walk by too- that can be very bad for their health. Don't get me wrong, I don't have anything against people that smoke, everyone is entitled to their opinions, but I think that it would be beneficial to everyone's health if smoking was banned in public areas. Also, it may discourage some people from smoking.

There are the pros and cons to both sides, but the bottom line is health and will it kill you. Smokers do have rights like everyone else, but everyone should have the right to breath air that is not going to kill them and that means in a public place. It's proven that smoking and second hand smoke can give you cancer. So...no smoking in public and please be a considerate smoker. We don't hold anything against you, we just want better health for you.

yeah banning in public places such like restaurants, clkubs and bars and whatnot its good. I got to go to a club in Canada (deep into canada) and the had a club that was NON SMOKING if you wanted to youd had to go outside and smoke. But the fact is that the air was clean inside and just partying up in a smoke free environment was great. I smoke and i actaully would bann it in clubs and bars and specially in restaurants

I live in British Columbia, Canada. We have had smoking bans for years now.... of course the smokers and businesses were pissed off at first, but everyone adapted, and it's so much nicer now.

Bann it, help prevent forest fires and nonforest fires. If everyone stops smoking and the match and lighter industries go bankrupt, so what, we did not stop progress for the horse and buggy industries. Smoking is a thing of the past, it is obsolete, YOUR DON"T SEE ANYONE SMOKING ON STAR TREK. Get rid of the cigs and join the 21st century....E Snuff Said!!!!!

public areas? like parks? something outside? or do you mean businesses, like resturaunts? if its a business i think its up to the business owner. he or she knows what type of people pay his bills by coming into his/her establishment. if.....smokers are the big money maker...i dont see them being banned. if its an outside public place like a park? unless it is monitored by some type of officer, who is gonna prevent it? i for one will smoke outside anywhere i want to. i dont see it any more harmful to the next person than the cfc's that are already being inhaled on a daily basis by non smokers. usually if i go up to a place of business and it has a smoking ban....i keep on going. i dont give them my money. smokers have rights too.
