OVA stands for original video animation and is an anime movie or series that was created strictly to be released on home video/dvd and not for TV. These are often special episodes or additional episodes for some popular series, a series animated but not for tv but video release, or some movies. The ova releases generally are of better animation quality and since it's made for home release dont have to follow the broadcasting restrictios.

OVA stands for "Original Video Animation" It's like a mini series. They give it that distinction to differentiate between it and the regular series.
