Pollution is the greater cause, but that would be connected to the Government. I can see to some degree that smoking causes some deformities with some people. It isn't the only cause of cancer though. The right wingers have con-****** a way for the insurance companies to not pay any claims is at the bottom of this scenario. One more reason to have National health care.

I smoke, and have suffered negative effects from it. I don't think there is a black & white answer...a lot depends on your genetics and such. But I believe no matter what the substance, it's always worse if you smoke it. So-called "second-hand" smoke is an entirely different matter. There has been no reputable study done that proves this is harmful. But it has been cited so much that people have begun to believe it to be true. It's very true that some people don't like the smell...but that doesn't mean you are going to get cancer...yet the gov't would have you believe that, because it furthers their interest of banning smoking. It's just another matter that the govt should stay out of. Clearly cigarette smokers have been turned into the hoodlum scapegoats of the country, largely to keep your attention away from more pressing environmental concerns. The people that make a federal case when they get a whiff of your smoke, are the same ones that joke and smirk about greenhouse gas and the ozone layer.

Hm. A government conspiracy to cover up the adverse health affects of something which they get literally billions out of in tax each year. Sounds plausible to me.
If you don't believe the hundreds and hundreds of scientific studies which prove smokers die younger then you probably wouldn't believe it unless 7 angels told you. Just because you know two old people who smoke who HAVEN'T got those conditions it doesn't prove the trend wrong - there are always going to be those who get lucky and don't develop smoking related diseases.

I agree, I am a sr. citizen and have smoked for years---starting about 30 years ago the med. prof. started blaming an ingrown toenail on smoking. I think it is a wag the dog situation to cover the real fossil fuels reasons for ills. I can remember getting sick in traffic jams years ago and it still has to be happening. I spent years walking everywhere by choice and can remember almost passing out from car exaust on a bridge in NC--with a sidewalk on it. I am still trying to figure out where the millions went that the government got from the cigarette industries??

Of course there are old people who've smoked a long time without any noticable problems, and they seem to be very vocal about it. The ones who've died from smoking obviously aren't going to be around to complain. To someone who's not really thinking about it, it might seem as if smoking doesn't kill anybody, since there's so few dead people complaining today, and all you can see today were the survivors.

They never talk about poor working conditions or environmental pollution. I wonder why? Because they can blame second hand smoke for everything. In some ways it is a joke. No I do not smoke or drink for that matter.

My dad was fit at 70 too. By age 86 the oxygen cord and tank were so much a part of his life he could no longer go anywhere. He just passed away last spring. My dad started at age 9 and smoke camel non filters his whole life. He didn't quit until he was 79 and regretted he didn't quit earlier. I am an ex smoker and see how my health has improved. I see my smoking sisters health getting worse. No smoking is judged fairly in my opinion.

I consider you, particularly. i in my opinion trust that folk are born with the genes of even if or not they get ailments or no longer. I do trust, although, that smoking might want to correctly be a contributing component in those ailments that folk are born with and at the same time as of their lives it comes out.

I have worked around convalescent house , and you would be surprised at how many in those places still smoke, even after they have amputations, heart attacks, and stokes.I believe that smoking is one of our worst health issues, followed up closely by obesity. The difference in the to people don't have to smoke. As far as smoking goes if you don't believe me go to a convalescent home and see the effects your self.
